2020年10月24日、ホンジュラス共和国の批准により核兵器禁止条約 (TPNW) の批准国が50か国となり、90日後の2021年1月22日に条約が発効されることとなった。同条約は、2017年に加盟国の過半数を上回る約130の国と地域が賛成し、ニューヨークの国連本部で採択されたものである。
1946年1月24日の第1回国連総会で採択された決議第1号である核兵器および大量破壊兵器の廃絶を求めた決議がようやく実現する。
2021年の核兵器禁止条約発効により、1975年に禁止された生物兵器 (BTWC)、1997年に禁止された化学兵器 (CWC) と並び、3つの大量破壊兵器の開発や使用等が禁止されることとなる。
