The communities of the Cook Islands have had to be self-reliant when it comes to natural disasters.
“We’ve had a fortnight of heavy, heavy rain. Just last week, a coconut tree fell across the road on my driveway. So [the community], we got out there and cleaned it up,” says Lydia Sijp, member of the Tupapa/Maraeranga disaster management committee on Rarotonga, the country’s largest and most populous island, and 2016 UNITAR training alumna.

Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Training Programme In-Person Workshop Resumes in Hiroshima
UNITAR Division for Prosperity/Hiroshima Office will hold the Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Training Programme from 13-18 February 2023 in Hiroshima, Japan.
This is the first time UNITAR Hiroshima Office will hold this programme’s in-person workshops since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out.
Nearly 20 diplomats and government officials from Asian countries will learn the theoretical and practical components of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

UNITAR achieved tremendous growth in beneficiaries in 2018, with a total outreach of 84,901 beneficiaries (49 per cent increase over 2017). The Peacekeeping Training Programme, the Green Development and Climate Change Programme, and the Global Network of International Training Centres for Authorities and Leaders (CIFAL) account for 90 per cent of UNITAR’s overall beneficiaries.
