Managing migration well: for more inclusive and resilient cities
19 October 2016. Quito, Ecuador – While migration is a global phenomenon, with 1 in 7 people in the world an internal or international migrant, the effects of migration are most felt at the local level. Already, more than half the world’s population lives in urban areas with 3.9 billion people set to move to city centres by 2030. The majority of the estimated 232 million international and 740 internal migrants move to urban areas. Migration is indeed an urban fact.

The workshop on Climate and Disaster Resilience in Coastal Asian Cities strengthened the capacity of local authorities to reduce urban risks and to adapt to climate change. The workshop was organized by UNITAR through the CIFAL Kuala Lumpur, CityNet and the Kyoto University in cooperation with Veolia Environnement and UNISDR.

Thanks to the Memorandum of Understanding signed between UNESCO and UNITAR in 2015, and building on our previous two reports on damage to archeological sites in Syria (2014) and in Syria, Iraq, Nepal, and Yemen (2015), satellite imagery analysis is now a routine tool for assessing potential damage to cultural heritage sites.
