UNITAR Hosts Webinar: Promoting Dialogue on Inclusive Cities

13 June 2016, Quito, Ecuador - UNITAR, jointly with the University of Melbourne, Australia and the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing of Ecuador hosted on 13 June a webinar titled “Inclusive Cities and the New Urban Agenda”.

The main objective of the webinar was to provide an overview of the concept of Inclusive Cities and to present examples of specific projects worldwide that promote social inclusive cities. Dr. Carolyn Whitzman, Professor of Urban Planning at the University of Melbourne, Australia delivered the webinar and facilitated a discussion among the 103 participants.

During the webinar, the following topics were addressed:

  • Social inclusion, social sustainability, and the right to the city 
  • Social infrastructure: physical infrastructure, social infrastructure across the life course: Early childhood, young adults, working age adults, the third age
  • The Sustainable Development Goals
  • The New Urban Agenda
  • Key social inclusion issues
  • What can planning and urban governance do?
  • Example 1: Gender-inclusive cites research program
  • Example 2. Travelling together: disability inclusive road development project
  • Reflection: Think globally, act locally

This was the first of a series of 10 webinars aimed to raise awareness on topics related to sustainable urbanization and the Habitat III Conference (www.habitat3.org).
