On 25 November in Hong Kong on behalf of Mr. Carlos Lopes, UNITAR’s Executive Director and UN Assistant Secretary General, Ms. Isabel Hubert, Associate Director, Training Department and Head, Peace, Security and Diplomacy Unit, signed with Professor Chan Chi-hou, Acting Provost of CityU a Memorandum of Understanding between UNITAR and the City University of Hong Kong.

Professor Wang Guiguo, Dean of the School of Law of CityU also attended the signing ceremony.
Developing agreements with Academic institutions such as Universities and Research Centres around the world is part of UNITAR’s partnerships strategy.
The purpose of the Memorandum is to provide a framework for cooperation where UNITAR and the City University of Hong Kong can exchange ideas and share knowledge in order to maximize the respective impact through working in partnership. By pooling resources and expertise and by developing curriculum and learning material in areas of common interest, they will work towards the integration of related activities and towards the implementation of joint training courses in areas of common interest.
 
During the signing ceremony, Ms. Hubert, Associate Director, UNITAR, stressed that “UNITAR is widening its outreach in the Asia Pacific region. We are very proud to have an academic centre of excellence as the City University of Hong Kong as a new partner in the region”.
 
“As the first university in Hong Kong to enter into an agreement with UNITAR, CityU is honoured to be part of a partnership that promotes educational and research collaboration while simultaneously underscoring CityU’s status as a leading educational institution.” said Professor Chan Chi-hou, Acting Provost of City University of Hong Kong.
 
In the recent past UNITAR has had the pleasure of working together with experts from the School of Law of the City University of Hong Kong and their contributions were extremely well appreciated. Based on this extremely positive experience and on the expertise of both institutions in the area of law education, the domain of international law was identified as a first concrete area for cooperation.
