18 September 2025, New York, USA – On 15-16 September 2025, the UNITAR office in New York, in partnership with the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Singapore and the Forum of Small States (FOSS), convened the annual Briefing for Delegates on the General Assembly and the Main Committees. The two-day programme, held at UN Headquarters, brought together 275 participants, including newly arrived diplomats, for a comprehensive orientation to the structure, rules, and practices of the General Assembly, while also fostering a deeper understanding of its evolving role within the UN system.

This unique five-week initiative was designed for third- and fourth-year students, offering them an exceptional opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge, practical professional experience, and critical leadership skills through immersive training with multiple United Nations agencies.
During the fellowship’s orientation programme, students explored key concepts such as the art of international negotiation and multilateral diplomacy, the organizational structure and functions of the United Nations, the research and analysis of General Assembly documents, and the UN’s role in advancing the global development agenda through sustainable development goals and international cooperation. Following this foundation, fellows participated in a month-long internship with various UN agencies, gaining practical experience in the organization’s work.

Held during a landmark year marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, this week-long programme from 21 July to 25 July brought together a cohort of globally minded young leaders to engage in intensive training focused on the UN system, multilateral negotiations, and the practical skills essential to international diplomacy. This year’s edition placed particular emphasis on youth-led innovation and the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across all sessions.
