31 July 2024, New York, New York - 0n July 8 - 17, 2024 The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) launched the 2024 iteration of the two organization’s long-term partnership programme, the SDGs Learning, Training and Practice (SDGs In Practice). SDGs in Practice is a series of substantive capacity-building trainings and knowledge-sharing sessions, held as a special event during the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), with a theme around the five Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in focus, SDG1-No Poverty, SDG2-Zero Hunger, SDG13-Climate Action, SDG16-Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and SDG17-Partnerships for the Goals.
23 July 2024, Geneva, Switzerland – Last month, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the University for Peace (UPEACE) celebrated the graduation of the latest cohort of master's students from their joint Masters Degrees: the M.A. in Development Studies and Diplomacy, the M.A. in Gender and Development, the M.A. in International Law and Diplomacy, and the M.A. in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes.
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) kicked off the Global Diplomacy Bootcamp at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This immersive programme aims to introduce participants to the UN system, enhance their understanding of international negotiations, and develop their skills for global leadership.
09 July 2024, New York, United States – The Women in Cyber Fellowship, an innovative initiative by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) New York Office in partnership with the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, and the United States Department of State held its seventh fellowship convening at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. This fellowship ran from July 1-5 wherein they welcomed 34 fellows from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and regions in developing countries, introducing them to critical United Nations and Cyber issues.
28 June 2024, New York, United States - The Global Diplomacy Initiative (GDI) had its Closing Ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters. Hosted by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) New York Office, the event celebrated the achievements of the Spring 2024 Cohort of GDI Graduates. The GDI Programme offers a unique learning experience for students and professionals, enabling them to deepen their understanding of the United Nations and its operations. Participants have the chance to gain knowledge and insights from experts and diplomats in the field.
27-28 June 2024, San Salvador, El Salvador – UNITAR New York Office successfully holds the Regional Workshop on Treaty Law and Practice for members of El Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA), or the Central American Integration System. The workshop was conducted in partnership with the Permanent Mission of El Salvador to the United Nations and the Foreign Ministry of El Salvador, with the assistance of Dr. Jose Gustavo Guerrero's Diplomatic Institute. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. David Nanopoulos, Chief of the Treaty Section of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, and Ms. Evelyn Campos Sanchez, Legal Officer at the Treaty Section of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs.
Jelena is an adjunct lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York, and a senior consultant on topics related to Women, Peace and Security (WPS). As part of her consultancy services, she acts as an expert for UNITAR’s Global Diplomacy Initiative (GDI). Her relationship with UNITAR started in 1996, when she participated in a UNITAR training as a young diplomat from her home country, Andorra. Her journey through the intricate corridors of global governance and her transformative career pathway paints a vivid picture of resilience, dedication and continuous learning.
13 May 2024, New York, USA – The UNITAR New York Office, in collaboration with the Permanent Missions of Ecuador and Portugal, successfully conducted a workshop on the relationship between the General Assembly and the Security Council. The workshop took place in the UNHQ Trusteeship Council Chamber, with approximately 150 United Nations personnel in attendance.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 calls to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts with strong emphasis on further implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). While climate change is a global phenomenon, some countries are more vulnerable to a warming planet. Given this, the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) was created in 2009 as a South-South cooperation platform for collective action to address global climate change. In 2021, UNITAR partnered with the CVF to implement the CVF capacity-building fellowship.
