Message from Michelle Gyles-McDonnough- UNITAR Executive Director

UNITAR

On this International Women’s Day, I am pleased to announce that I joined the International Gender Champions. Today, we must all answer the call to action to achieve a future where the rights, equality, and empowerment of all women and girls are fully realized. The theme, For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment., serves as a powerful reminder that gender equality is not just a goal—it is a necessity.

Gender equality is fundamental to ending violence, ensuring safe and peaceful societies, building strong economies, and achieving sustainable development. A world where women and girls can fully realize their potential is a world that benefits everyone. Yet, we cannot afford to wait another 30 years to make this a reality. The time for action is now.

At UNITAR, we are ready to do our part. As Executive Director, I am committed to fostering an office culture that is free of gender-based discrimination and harassment. This includes ensuring that all staff complete mandatory training on gender equality and raising these critical issues at UNITAR townhall meetings.

Furthermore, I am dedicated to promoting gender-balanced participation in UNITAR’s learning-related events. Our goal is to achieve at least 50% female participation overall, reinforcing our commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities in education and professional development.

Real change requires collective action. On this International Women’s Day, I invite all of you—partners, stakeholders, and individuals—to join us in advancing gender equality. Together, we can build a future where all women and girls have the rights, opportunities, and empowerment they deserve.

Let’s take action together.

Michelle Gyles-McDonnough, UNITAR Executive Director
