05 March 2025, Geneva, Switzerland – The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is proud to announce its participation in the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) AI Skills Coalition, reinforcing its commitment to AI education for multilateral diplomacy. This collaboration further highlights UNITAR’s dedication to equipping international affairs professionals with essential AI knowledge and skills, supporting effective decision-making in an increasingly digital world.
As part of this effort, UNITAR’s Artificial Intelligence and International Affairs (AI | IA) Bulletin is now available through the AI Skills Coalition. This key resource provides diplomats and professionals with curated updates on AI developments, upcoming events, and training opportunities. By offering trusted, ethical, and forward-looking resources, UNITAR aims to ensure that global policymakers and diplomats remain informed and prepared to navigate the evolving AI landscape. Through its training programmes, expert-led briefing sessions, and tailored workshops, UNITAR plays a pivotal role in equipping professionals with the necessary competencies to understand AI’s implications for governance, international law, and diplomacy. By leveraging its expertise in multilateral training, UNITAR is actively contributing to shaping the global AI education agenda and fostering knowledge-sharing across the international community.
The AI Skills Coalition, led by ITU under the AI for Good Impact Initiative, is a UN-led global platform for AI education and capacity building. Created in response to the UN’s call for a global AI capacity-building framework, the initiative directly aligns with the Global Digital Compact and WTSA-24 Resolution COM4/AI. It aims to democratize AI learning, bridge the global AI skills gap, foster inclusivity, and strengthen global partnerships. In line with this goal, the Coalition recently launched the Digital AI Skills Library and a Training Portfolio, consolidating courses and materials from leading educational initiatives, UN partners, and top researchers. With the support of over 30 partners, the initiative aims to train at least 10,000 individuals by the end of the year, prioritizing learners from developing and Least Developed Countries, as well as women and girls.
By joining the AI Skills Coalition, UNITAR further contributes to global AI education efforts, expands its reach, and continues to build its role in equipping diplomats and policymakers with AI-related knowledge and skills. As technology continues to reshape international relations, UNITAR is committed to continuing to provide cutting-edge education at the forefront of AI capacity-building. Partnerships like these are essential in strengthening AI literacy, combatting misinformation, and fostering informed decision-making. UNITAR is proud to contribute to these global efforts, ensuring that diplomats and policymakers have the knowledge and skills needed to navigate AI for effective and ethical governance.
