Sustainable peace can only be successful in the long run if the peace dividend reaches all parts of society. Exclusion and polarization undermine social cohesion and fuel conflict, while inclusion and social reconciliation foster understanding among different groups, leading to the adoption of nonviolent conflict resolution mechanisms and democratic participation. Following this proposition, UNITAR is developing initiatives aimed at supporting local, national, regional and international stakeholders by enhancing their capacities to address the needs of the most vulnerable population groups, that are more likely to be excluded from decision-making processes such as members of marginalised communities, abductees, victims, former members of armed groups, dependents/families of ex-combatants, civilian returnees or ‘self-demobilized’ when they are going back to civilian life.
