3 August 2025, Osaka, Japan - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and Pasona Group Inc. signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 3 August at the UN Pavilion at EXPO 2025 Osaka, Japan, reaffirming both parties’ commitment to accelerating joint efforts toward sustainable growth and inclusive prosperity worldwide. 

Building on the initial MOU signed in June 2023, the renewed agreement elaborates on the concrete areas and scope of collaboration in the form of developing and implementing initiatives such as knowledge-sharing, joint educational courses, and collaboration on projects to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the coming years.

Strengthening Partnerships for Learning and Shared Prosperity

Michelle Gyles-McDonnough, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNITAR Executive Director, and Mr. Makiya Nambu, Director & Managing Executive Officer of Pasona Group Inc., signed the new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 3 August during a signing ceremony held at the UN Pavilion within EXPO 2025 Osaka. 

The MOU provides both parties with a renewed framework for cooperation on joint learning initiatives such as skills training, study tours, workshops, and local outreach events, aiming to advance the SDGs. Specifically, the two sides have agreed to explore opportunities to further strengthen their partnership by designing and delivering high-quality, tailored educational initiatives, with a special focus on entrepreneurship skills training targeted at youth and women to foster sustainable small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Egypt, Iraq, and Lebanon. Other key thematic areas envisioned under the agreement include the green and blue economies, rural development, and job creation.

Highlights of Ongoing Cooperation

Under the previous MOU between UNITAR and Pasona Group Inc., both parties have continued to foster their partnership through joint learning initiatives. 

These include collaboration within UNITAR’s project Bolstering Livelihoods: A Digital Reskilling Programme for Ukrainian Women Evacuees in Poland implemented in 2023-2024. A recent partnerships milestone is the joint organization of the workshop in Awaji Island in February 2025, as part of the UNITAR’s “Leaders for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific: Sea and Human Security Training Programme”.

Furthermore, prior to the signing of the MOU, UNITAR hosted an event at the EXPO Osaka 2025 venue titled “Empowering Older Generations through Digital Inclusion and Lifelong Learning: Harnessing Their Contributions to Economic Growth.” Mr. Makiya Nambu, Director & Managing Executive Officer of Pasona Group Inc., joined as one of the speakers and shared insights drawn from real-world business cases.
