為末さんは、スプリント種目の世界大会で日本人として初めてメダルを獲得し、シドニー・アテネ・北京と3度のオリンピックに日本代表として出場しました。2001年に男子400メートルハードルで日本記録を樹立され、2021年7月現在もその記録は破られていません。
