2021年6月10日・広島 ― 新型コロナウイルスの危機は、これまで世界が進めてきた持続可能な開発目標(SDGs)への歩みを妨げ、後戻りさせている。いまだ、パンデミックによる影響の全容は把握しきれていない。一方で、私たちが望む世界を2030年までに実現させるために、どのような行動を起こしていくのか、自身に問いかける機会も与えてくれていると言える。
上智大学のオンラインシンポジウム「コロナ禍のSDGsへのインパクトと今後の展望」での基調講演で、国連事務次長補兼国連ユニタール総代表ニキル・セスはこのように語りました。
上智大学大学院の植木安弘教授がモデレーターを務めたパネルディスカッションでは、国連開発計画（UNDP）インド常駐代表の野田章子氏やUNDP駐日代表の近藤哲生氏を交えて議論。学生など247人がオンラインで聴講しました。
セス総代表は、SDGsの17項目すべてについて、新型コロナウイルスによる現時点での影響を解説。貧困、気候変動、国際協力など多岐にわたる目標のすべてがパンデミックの打撃を受けており、世界中で格差が拡大している現状を伝えました。コロナ禍で約１憶3,200万人もの人々が慢性的な食糧不足に苦しみ、2014年以降徐々に増え始めた飢餓人口の増加に拍車をかけています。

However, many National Statistical Offices (NSO) face challenges in monitoring and reviewing the implementation of the SDGs. These challenges include the complexity of measuring certain problems and building relevant indicators, limited statistical capacity to monitor identified indicators, the lack of tools to facilitate the use of available information, and coordination difficulties experienced by stakeholders in producing, storing, and using the data, to name just a few.

The recent visit of the Secretary-General to the UNOSAT team set the tone of the new management phase at UNOSAT, which is now a recognised centre of excellence within the United Nations system in the areas of satellite analysis and geospatial information. While the visit of the Secretary-General confirms this recognition and is a reward to the staff, it also shows the gradual gain of importance of satellite derived information for the work of the UN. UNOSAT has spearheaded innovation in satellite analysis since its creation in 2000.

2015年9月16－21日の日程で国連ユニタール広島事務所は米国国際開発援助庁（US AID）女性開発プロジェクトと中国新聞共催で国連ユニタール アフガニスタン女子代表サッカーチームのリーダーシップとコミュニケーション能力向上研修を実施しました。
スポーツをすることには多くの利点があります。特に紛争国に住む女性にとって自尊心を高め社会参画を促進し、既存のジェンダー規範を疑問視し、リーダーとして活躍する機会を与えるなどスポーツを経験することによる多くの潜在的な利点が挙げられます[1]。本研修ではアフガニスタン女子代表サッカーチームのサッカースキルおよび個々人の能力強化を通じてアフガニスタンの発展に寄与することを目指しました。
リーダーシップスキル、チームワーク向上、コミュニケーション手法やスポーツ心理学などアフガニスタン女子代表サッカーチームのニーズに沿った研修を広島で実施しました。様々なトレーニングやコーチング手法の成功事例や選手としての課題やリーダーシップを磨く機会などについてスポーツ選手との対談を通じて学びました。また、9月20にエディオンスタジアムで開催されたアンジュビオレ広島との親善試合では懸命にプレーしました。
