Over 100 of the Institute’s staff gathered in Geneva, Switzerland on 7-8 July for the biannual retreat to take stock of the achievements of the past two years and devise an outward-looking strategy for the years to come. The event, which was introduced by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, H.E.
South Africa’s Diplomatic Academy and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) recently held a six‐day regional training course on Conference Diplomacy and Multilateral Negotiation for diplomats from Southern African Development Community countries (SADC). The course, attended by 29 representatives, took place in Pretoria, South Africa, from 15‐20 June 2009 and was run by a team of international and regional experts specializing in multilateral conference diplomacy training.
UNITAR took part in the Second Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, a large event gathering in Geneva from 16 to 19 June the global disaster community of stakeholders.

Geneva 18th June 2009 - UNITAR’s Climate Change Programme  and partners presented the results of fourteen pilot projects in Asia and Africa that brought together scientists and local communities in Asia and Africa to develop climate change risk communication materials that support decision making, raise awareness and also implement concrete actions.
UNITAR organized a session on “Decentralized cooperation – Capacity Building” through its Local Development Programme, in cooperation with CIFAL Findhorn, and the Climate Change Programme.
Hiroshima, Japan - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) will organise a Roundtable on Diversity and a Knowledge-Based Society.
The Institute is delighted to have as speakers two leading scholars, Dr. Kiyoshi Kurokawa, Professor, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies and former Special Advisor to the Cabinet of Japan; and Dr. Shigeru Miyagawa, Professor of Linguistics and Japanese Language and Culture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
