19 August 2024, Hiroshima, Japan – Tanzanian entrepreneur and assistant lecturer Angela Baltazary is passionate about conservation. Through the UNITAR programme on green livelihoods, she developed and embarked on a project to convert the methane in organic waste to protein, which would then be used in her venture that breeds, raises and harvests fish for food. Using organic waste in this way reduces greenhouse gases while contributing to public health and food security in Tanzania.
16 August 2024, Hiroshima, Japan - The threat of a nuclear world war is far from over, with several countries still holding nuclear weapons in their arsenals. As this generation is accountable to future generations, the role of passionate diplomats negotiating for a nuclear-weapons-free world has become more important than ever. One such diplomat is Soksamnang “Sam” Nov from Cambodia. He is currently a First Secretary to the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Cambodia to the United Nations in New York. He engages in work related to the First Committee including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons ( etc.. He participated in the 2024 UNITAR Hiroshima Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Training to further his skills as a diplomat.
14 August 2024, Hiroshima, Japan – Motivated Sudanese nationals, especially those who are internally displaced, are invited to apply to join the UNITAR training programme “Promoting Socioeconomic Stability through Institutional Capacity and Livelihood Development in Sudan.” The programme aims to equip participants with skills in agribusiness, entrepreneurship, innovation, finance and trade and digital literacy to “build back better”, irrespective of where they are. The application deadline is 25 August 2024.
Prashanthi Krishnamoorthy is the deputy director of the South Asia Division at the Sri Lanka Foreign Service, where she manages bilateral relations with India, Maldives and Pakistan. Prashanthi took part in the FY2023 UNITAR Hiroshima Training Programme on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation to enhance her ability to support and advance global disarmament and non-proliferation efforts.
2 August 2024, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR is accepting applications to its training programme on women’s leadership in disaster risk reduction, from learners over 18 years of age, living in or from Pacific small island developing states and Asia. Women are highly encouraged to apply. This programme, “Women’s Leadership in Tsunami-Based Disaster Risk Reduction for World Tsunami Awareness Day 2024”, aims to equip learners with lifelong skills to develop inclusive disaster risk reduction plans that reflect the needs of their communities and countries. 19 July 2024, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR invites Afghan youth to apply to the “UNITAR Training for Afghan Youth: Advancing Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship” training programme. This programme is open to youth keen on entrepreneurship and agribusiness and will run from August 2024 to March 2025, including two online phases and an in-person workshop. Participants will learn crucial digital, financial and entrepreneurship skills tailored to enhance food security and economic stability in their communities.
Vannie Djounguep is reshaping gender equality, entrepreneurship and environmental sustainability in Cameroon and beyond. Vannie is the founder and executive director of an organization that advocates for gender equality and environmental protection, especially in the informal sector. She participated in the UNITAR Advancing Gender Equality and Women Empowerment 2023 Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy Training Programme, organized in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and generously funded by the Government of Canada.
12 July 2024, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR, together with Hiroshima Prefecture and Nagasaki Prefecture, will support the organizing of a side event at the Second Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). The side event, “Advancing the Global Agenda of a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World”, will be led by the Government of Austria. It will be a panel discussion and take place on 24 July 2024, from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. CEST/8:15 to 9:30 p.m. JST at the conference room XXII of the Palais des Nations.
8 July 2024, Shanghai, China - UNITAR and Cushman & Wakefield signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 20 June 2024, setting the foundation for a strategic partnership aimed at exploring and advancing mutual areas of interest. Director of UNITAR Division for Prosperity Ms. Mihoko Kumamoto and Chief Executive Officer of Greater China at Cushman & Wakefield Mr. Jinquan Zhao took part in the signing ceremony, underscoring the high level of commitment from both parties.
