16 November 2023, Hiroshima, Japan – Mr. Tetsuo Kondo joined the Advisory Board of the UNITAR Division for Prosperity in August 2023. He brings to the Board expertise from decades of experience as a Japanese diplomat and United Nations official.

Mr. Kondo sees many strengths and unique values in UNITAR.

In his work, Mr Kondo has seen the needs – and especially training needs – of developing countries that must be met to help more people secure sustainable livelihoods. He hopes to contribute to UNITAR Division for Prosperity by serving as a bridge to partners in different sectors and countries, to leave no one behind.

Mr. Tetsuo Kondo is the former Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representation Office in Tokyo. He served as Country Director of UNDP Chad, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP Kosovo, Senior Humanitarian Coordination Advisor of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor Leste, Senior Advisor of UNDP Regional Centre in Bangkok, Special Advisor to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General at the UN Mission for Assistance to Iraq, and Special Advisor to the Bureau for Resources and Strategic Partnerships in UNDP New York.

Prior to the United Nations, he held various positions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, including Vice-President of the UNDP/United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Board, First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations, and Assistant Director of the Law of the Sea, Office of Treaty Bureau.

Mr. Kondo currently serves as a visiting professor of development and global health policy at Sophia University, University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Nagasaki University, and Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan.

UNITAR welcomes Mr. Tetsuo Kondo to the Advisory Board. We look forward to learning from his expertise and working together to enhance the work of the Division.
