UNOSAT rapid mapping was activated this March over Uganda in the aftermath of deadly landslides provoked by severe flooding in the region of Bududa.
In a change of focus determined by the conclusion of search and rescue operations in Haiti, UNOSAT closed its Rapid Mapping activation and embarked at the request of UNDP on a comprehensive damage assessment analysis over Port-au-Prince and neighbouring cities.
Spot Image S.A. and UNOSAT have a history of working together to enable mapping activities and applications based on Earth Observation data. A formal agreement signed recently reaffirms and strengthen the partnership linking UNOSAT and SPOT IMAGE and providing the United Nations with favorable rates on satellite imagery routinely used at UNOSAT to produce analyses and crisis management maps.

The second edition of the annual Retreat convened by the United Nations Secretary-General took place in Torino, Italy, on 29 and 30 August 2008. The Retreat provides an opportunity for top UN officials to exchange ideas and reflect on how best the Organization can tackle current challenges and discharge its high profile responsibilities more effectively. The annual event has been organized as a joint effort between UNITAR, the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC), and the Department of Management in the UN Secretariat.
