Food systems are simultaneously a leading cause of environmental degradation and depletion of natural resources. Currently, food systems are responsible for a significant 20 percent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and are a major driver of land conversion, deforestation and loss of biodiversity. With the world’s population predicted to expand to 9.7 billion individuals by 2050, these environmental impacts do not make current food systems sustainable.
