A catastrophic combination of conflict, high food prices and drought is gripping much of the Horn of Africa and Somalia in particular. “Reduce the fear of migration by 50% until 2015”. Could this be a migration related Millennium Development Goal (MDG)? While it seems rather unlikely that the international community will agree on international targets when it comes to migration in the near future, it is clear that human mobility and the achievement of the MDGs are related. The work done by UNOSAT at the height of the crisis in Kyrgyzstan has been used widely in human rights verifications. This confirms one of the early methodological innovations brought about by the UNOSAT team: prolonging the useful life of satellite derived information beyond the emergency phase.
