The timeline reference for the creation of the Federal University of Pernambuco is the 11th August 1946, when the University of Recife (UR) was founded as part of Federal Government's Higher Educational expansion programs in Brazil. UFPE, represented by a community of 50,000 people (students, professors and administrative personell), is committed at defending Human Rights and outlines a wide range of teaching, research and community actions that address economic, social, health and environmental problems. It is a vigilant organization when it comes to the universal respect and observance of Human Rights and fundamental freedoms for everyone, regardless of race, sex, language or religion according to the guiding principles of the United Nations Charter. At UFPE, thousands of doctoral dissertations and master's thesis pinpoint relevant discussions concerning Human Rights, equality and social justice have already been produced, including social conflict resolutions in Northeast Brazil. Let us emphasize a pioneering action as the creation of an LGBT Advocacy Caucus, being one of the first Brazilian educational institutions to allow the adoptive name rather than the legal birth name, a model that has now been followed by several other Brazilian institutions. Also noteworthy is the current student assistance policy that guarantees housing, healthy food and internship opportunities for students in situations of social and economic vulnerability. It should be noted that currently this number represents more than half of all students at the institution.
