Founded in 1960, Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) is a public institution, part of the Brazilian federal higher education system. Its headquarters are located in the city of Niterói and its campuses can be found in various parts of the state of Rio de Janeiro, as a result of a strong decentralization policy. There is also an out-of-state campus in Oriximiná, in the Amazon rainforest. UFF stated mission is to produce, disseminate, and apply knowledge and culture in a critical and socially relevant way. The university operates in accordance with the following basic tenets: academic excellence, social impact, innovation, and knowledge transfer to society in general.
