The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is a principal training arm of the United Nations, working in every region of the world. In 2019 UNITAR’s reach extended to more than 130,000 beneficiaries through face-to-face seminars and workshops, e-learning and other training-related events.
Established in 2003, UNITAR is the only United Nations entity with a presence in the symbolic city of Hiroshima. As a part of the UNITAR Division for Prosperity, the Office develops and delivers needs-based training in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To date, we have reached nearly 50,000 learners in least developed countries, conflict and post-conflict states, and fragile states, as well as Japanese citizens, through our programmes along six pillars:
- Entrepreneurship and Private Sector Development
- Leadership and Inclusion
- Finance and Trade
- Anti-Corruption and Combatting Crime
- Frontier Technologies
- Hiroshima and Peace
Our programmes are supported by the international community, governments – including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Hiroshima Prefectural Government and the City of Hiroshima – and private organizations. In addition, substantive contributions and participation of local and international universities, as well as other domestic and global bodies, ensure our programmes meet the highest professional standards and levels of academic excellence.
With our official supporting organization, UNITAR Association (Japanese website), the Hiroshima Office also conducts outreach, builds partnerships with entities in Japan, and hosts public events to raise awareness of and interest in international cooperation and peace among the Japanese public.

UNITAR established its Hiroshima Office in 2003, in response to the desire of the people and authorities in Hiroshima to contribute more actively to global peace and development. The Hiroshima Office has an inherent strength in the areas of peacebuilding, post-conflict reconstruction and disarmament, as well as the broader themes in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.
