Greenhouse gas emissions directly contribute to global warming and climate change. The technology and fuel used for electricity generation are often responsible for high greenhouse gas emissions. Recently, UNITAR conducted a survey among energy experts in the humanitarian system to estimate the number of diesel and petrol generators that are used to produce electricity in humanitarian operations, with a view to establishing the opportunities to transition to solar solutions.
"159 companies are responsible for 80% of global corporate greenhouse gas emissions. Most of them don’t have all the answers on how to finance and achieve the targets they have set". This article brings some light into the black box of how the transition can be tackled in practice and is written by Eliya Devay, graduate of the UNITAR-Franklin University Switzerland Joint Master’s programme in Responsible Leadership & Climate Action. Eliya is specialized in Sustainable Finance and currently works at the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) as a Consultant.

16 November 2021, New York, USA – The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) New York Office partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Human Development Report Office (HDRO) to organize a workshop on the lessons learned from the Human Development Report 2020. The workshop was attended by approximately 130 participants who gained a better understanding of human development and how to mitigate the impact of human activities on the environment.
