9- 10 September, New York USA, virtual seminar – The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Office in New York successfully launched the Joint Swiss-UNITAR Briefing on United Nations Budgetary Matters training series on Tuesday, 7th September 2021. The four-day virtual training programme caters to the needs of the incoming delegates of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee. The last two sessions have directly benefited more than 100 delegates each session from numerous Member States.
20 September 2021, New York, USA - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) New York Office in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar, developed the Strengthening Knowledge and Skills in Multilateral Diplomacy: Induction Course for Qatar Diplomats which took place between 20 - 24 September 2021 via Zoom. This is a comprehensive course designed to enhance the performance of 13 diplomats from the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations. Mr. Pelayo Alvarez from the UNITAR New York Office greeted the participants and the panelists, Dr. Jimena Leiva Roesch, Fellow at International Peace Institute and Dr. Rebecca Webber, Former US Diplomat, who presented the session together.
8-14 September 2021, New York, USA - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) New York Office concluded a private Security Council training program for Ghana’s delegation. Ghana is one of the newly elected five countries to serve as non-permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council for the 2022-2023 term. The training, which lasted for five days and attended by approximately 75 participants, provided participants with knowledge, information, and recommendations on the Security Council. It also included topics such as the formal and informal Council meetings, practices and outcomes, case studies, working methods, what makes a successful term on the Council, among other vital topics.
16 September 2021, New York, USA - The UN Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNITAR, Mr. Nikhil Seth, is visiting New York during the high-level period of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This is an official visit to the opening of the seventy-sixth session of the UNGA.
16 September 2021, New York, United States -UNITAR started the second day of training where Mr. Marco Suazo, Head of UNITAR New York office, warmly welcomed the participants and introduced the first speaker of the day, Ambassador H.E. Mrs. Egriselda Lopez, Incoming Chair of the Fourth Committee and Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the United Nations.
With the hackathon, Enas became more inspired to continue promoting healthier lifestyles and cities’ renaturalization with her students. She has replicated some of the methodologies from the hackathon in her classes.
13 September 2021, New York, USA - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) New York Office, in partnership with the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Singapore to the United Nations as Chair of the Forum of Small States (FOSS), concluded a two-day course entitled “Briefing New Delegates on the Work of the 76th General Assembly” with approximately 331 participants attending. Mr. Marco A. Suazo, Head of UNITAR office in New York, Highlighted the message of the General Assembly and how important it is to deliver it. He then welcomed Mr. Nikhil Seth, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, Executive Director of UNITAR, for his remarks.

7 September 2021, Geneva, Switzerland – The current global pandemic highlighted how training to build resilience is more critical than ever. For the past 18 months, the Covid-19 crisis and its consequences have been the primary concern of world leaders and government officials. However, this poses the risk of overshadowing yet another existential challenge, which requires immediate attention and action.

In November, the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will convene in Glasgow. In light of this, UNITAR, the UN Resident Coordinator's Office for Mauritius and Seychelles, the Group of 77, and China implemented a series of e-Workshops on Climate Change Diplomacy to support the educational development of delegates and representatives. These training sessions aimed to build the capacities of government officers on climate change negotiations and provide them with essential knowledge for the upcoming COP26. The design of the workshops enabled high-level officials to extensively develop their knowledge, competency, and train their negotiation skills.

To lead the discussion on the challenges of COP26, UNITAR selected Mr. Marcelo Rocha, an agronomist, land use expert, and lead coordinating author at the IPCC, and Ms. Ana Kleymeyer, former Senior Advisor to the Argentinian Secretary of the Environment. The trainers highlighted the paramount agreements in their history, as well as the terminologies and concepts of climate finance that are beneficial to Small Island Developing States (SIDS), such as Mauritius and Seychelles, in addition to providing background information on the history of COP and UNFCCC.
