8-29 July 2011, Libreville, Gabon - UNITAR attended the National SAICM Planning and Inception Workshop held in Libreville from 28 to 29 July 2011. The main objectives of the workshop were to launch and plan the implementation of the national project for the implementation of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).
The 2011 UNITAR-IPI Fellowship Programme in Peacemaking and Preventive Diplomacy was held in Holmenkollen, Norway and addressed by a range of distinguished resource persons from around the world, including for the first time, the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities, Knut Vollebaek.
July 2011, Benghazi, Libya – ACTED and UNOSAT have expanded their cooperation by joining forces in the area of humanitarian assessment in the field. In Libya, ACTED experts in the field and UNOSAT analysts in Geneva have been working jointly using satellite imagery analysis and ground surveys to create impact assessment maps that are used by humanitarian operators in Benghazi and Misratah.

The UN Development Group (UNDG), in collaboration with several partners, organized a workshop for the Asia-Pacific region to support UN Country Teams in mainstreaming environmental sustainability, climate change, and disaster risk reduction in country programming. The event was supported by UNITAR with resources from the One UN CC:Learn Initiative.
Extended drought is causing a severe food crisis in the Horn of Africa with parts of Somalia so severely affected that no less than 100,000 people are moving within Somalia and towards neighbouring Kenya and Ethiopia in search of emergency assistance. According to OCHA reports over 11 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in the Horn of Africa. The famine is expected to spread across all regions in southern Somalia soon unless urgent measures are put in place.
27 July, Geneva, Switzerland – UNOSAT and the partners of the GEO-PICTURES project activated their on-line geo-tagging capacity to test the operational capacity of the system in the aftermath of the blast at a munitions dump in southern Cyprus. The blast that killed at least 12 people also caused important damage to the island's largest power station causing widespread power cuts.
