15 February 2022, Hiroshima, Japan – Over seventy-six years ago, the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, claiming tens of thousands of lives and wounding many more. Today, the city and the world still grapple with the threat of nuclear weapons. With its office in Hiroshima, UNITAR has an inherent interest in peacebuilding, post-conflict reconstruction and disarmament and promotes broad dialogue to create a peaceful and sustainable world.
11 February 2022, Hiroshima, Japan – Two UNITAR alumnae from Tonga reported on the aftermath of the eruption and tsunami that struck their country, at a UNITAR webinar held on 26 January 2022. Sandy Siutiti Tuipulotu and Simata-e-la'ā Palu, both currently based in Japan, were able to apply what they learned in the 2021 UNITAR disaster risk reduction (DRR) training programme to help their friends and family in the disaster
23 December, 2021, Hiroshima, Japan – UNITAR Division for Prosperity will convene an online panel discussion to explore women’s leadership in disaster risk reduction (DRR) to promote inclusion and equality. The panel will be held on 26 January 2022, noon to 1:30 p.m. (Japan Standard Time), and is free and open to the public (registration required).
20 December 2021, Budapest, Hungary / Hiroshima, Japan / Geneva, Switzerland – UNITAR Division for Prosperity and Central Bank of Hungary (Magyar Nemzeti Bank – MNB) have launched a new partnership to develop a training programme on the digitalization of the financial sector.
• The new round for the Empowering the Sahel Region through Digital Reskilling and Upskilling to Enhance Productive Sources of Livelihood and Employment is open for applications.
• The programme will help participants turn their entrepreneurial ideas into digital products that empower others and address critical local issues arising from the COVID-19 crisis.
• The six-week programme will be held in French. It will start on 3 January 2022.
• Topics will include programming, coding, application development, digital literacy, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and gender leadership.
• To apply, you must be a woman or youth in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal, with a deep interest in digital technologies, good oral and written French skills, and the passion to make a positive impact on society.
• Deadline to apply: 29 December 2021.

It is this type of grassroots action which is necessary if the world is to address the challenges brought about by climate change.

UNITAR Division for Prosperity hopes to do just that with its Youth Ambassador programmes, one in Hiroshima and another in Asia and the Pacific, where high school students develop projects to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
26 October 2021, Hiroshima, Japan - UNITAR ran its online training programme Social entrepreneurship training programme for women in the Horn of Africa from October 2020 to June 2021. 247 women entrepreneurs from Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Sudan joined the programme. Participants developed entrepreneurial skills to address local needs through innovative and creative business solutions.
22 October 2021, Hiroshima, Japan - Hayder Maala, alumnus of the UNITAR Iraq Fellowship Programme, believes entrepreneurship training for young people will help Iraq’s development. After attending a UNITAR training of trainers programme, Hayder started a youth development NGO and a startup incubator, and became a coach for UNITAR programmes. He is now managing the digital/frontier technologies programme for UNITAR's Division for Prosperity. Applications are being accepted for the "Leading Inclusive 4IR: Empowering Women in Iraq for the Future of Work through Digital Reskilling" programme.
21 October 2021, Hiroshima, Japan – On 15 November 2021, UNITAR is launching its 6-week online training programme Strategic Response to COVID-19 Crisis: Empowering the Sahel Region through Digital Reskilling and Upskilling to Enhance Productive Sources of Livelihood and Employment and is currently accepting applications until 10 November.
