15 March 2024, New York, USA – The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Office in New York successfully organized an Expert-Level Workshop on Addressing the Threats Posed by Sea Level Rise. The event occurred from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations.

On behalf of the Co-Facilitators of the process for the GA decision 78/544 of 16 January 2024, the Permanent Representatives of Costa Rica and New Zealand, UNITAR partnered with the Global Center for Climate Mobility (GCCM) and the Republic of Korea to provide Member States with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge on matters about sea level rise.

A total number of 80 participants representing different Member States joined UNITAR’s workshop to gain knowledge and research insights from top experts and practitioners on the topic of sea level rise. The workshop was opened with remarks from H.E. Hwang Joon-kook, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea.

The opening remarks were also given by Professor Kamal Amakrane, Managing Director of the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), and Mr. Marco Suazo, Head of UNITAR New York Office.

The workshop was followed by four thematic sessions, presented by the experts in the field as follows: 

1. Knowledge, Data & Science by National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA): Dr. Nadya Vinogradova Shiffer, Lead, Climate Variability and Change, Program Scientist & Manager at Science Mission Directorate of NASA HQ, and Dr. Benjamin Hamlington, Research Scientist & Team Lead, Sea Level Change Team at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

2. International Law & Law of the Sea by International Law Commission: Prof. Nilufer Oral, Co-Chair of ILC & ILC Study Group on sea-level rise about international law, Prof. Patrícia Galvão Teles, Co-Chair of ILC & ILC Study Group on sea-level rise about international law, and Prof. Juan José Ruda Santolaria, Co-Chair of ILC Study Group on sea-level rise about international law.

3. Culture & Heritage by UNESCO: Ms. Estelle Zadros, Senior UN Coordination Officer at the UNESCO Liaison Office to the UN.

4. Livelihoods & Socioeconomic Impacts by UNDP: Ms Srilata Kammila, Head for Climate Change Adaptation at UNDP Bureau for Policy and Programme Support.

All of the invited panellists shared their research insights, key inputs, and analysis takeaways and were then invited to an interactive Q&A session with the participants of the workshop by the moderator Ms Leticia Zamora Zumbado. The closing remarks from the Co-Facilitators, the Permanent Representatives of Costa Rica, Maritza Chan Valverde, and New Zealand, Carolyn Schwalger, successfully concluded the workshop.
