In responding to the growing demand of knowledge transfer for in-country capacity development, UNOSAT experts have restructured the Programme’s portfolio of training and technical assistance tools. UNOSAT predicts a strong increase in the requests by UN member states and their specialised institutions for capacity development and technical assistance projects aimed at reinforcing national knowledge of GIS and satellite derived geospatial information in processes as crucial as territorial planning, integrated disaster risk reduction strategies, monitoring and analysis.   UNOSAT is mostly known for its mapping output but its experience is not limited to operations and satellite imagery analysis only. Since 2005 UNOSAT delivers tailored training and capacity building activities to various categories of beneficiaries. Starting in 2008 UNOSAT worked at diversifying its training capacity and offer by adding modules designed to target a wider number of training participants with diverse technical skills and needs in the overall area of geospatial applications. As of 2009 collaboration agreements signed between UNITAR/UNOSAT and highly recognized academic and training institutions gave UNOSAT the necessary strength to become a worldwide player capable of providing professional and accredited (i.e. ECTS system) training courses up to University Master level.   As of 2011 more than 30 knowledge sharing activities and training courses have been designed, prepared and delivered by UNOSAT reaching more than 40 beneficiary countries and a number of approximately 600 active professionals. UNOSAT training is based on the operational experience gained by UNOSAT over the last decade using cutting-edge applied research and GIS methodologies for satellite based analysis and mapping.   In 2012 and 2013 UNOSAT experts and trainers plans to increase again the number of beneficiaries supported successfully and to reach out to new countries willing to integrate GIS technology and solutions in their territorial and development planning processes.   Please visit the UNOSAT website for more information on their current activities.
