The 2009 Session of the UNITAR Series on Sea and Human Security, entitled Governance Towards a Comprehensive Security for Seas and the Ocean: the Hiroshima Initiative was held at the UNITAR Hiroshima Offices from 27 September - 2 October. Attended by some thirty-six participants and experts from thirteen countries, the Session represented the sixth in the Series and the third since the adoption of the "Hiroshima Initiative."
The "Hiroshima Initiative" is utilised to mainstream the concepts of the Series, including delineating a comprehensive approach to ocean security, including economic, social and environmental aspects as well as the underlying implications for sustainable development. The week comprised interactive lectures, study visits and practical exercises and was capped by a Roundtable open to the public.
A unique feature of the Session was the return of three 2008 participants, recipients of the UNITAR-Bannai Small Grants Fund who gave presentations centred around the real world implementation of the ideals of the Series and in particular, the Hiroshima Initiative.
