1 September 2011, New York, USA. The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in New York and the United Nations Democracy Fund are organizing a seminar on the Interdependence between Democracy and Development. The seminar will be held on Thursday 1 September 2011 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
This seminar will explore the linkages or interdependence between democracy and development and seek to discern whether democracy is a necessary element for economic development. Democratic institutions which normally require transparency, accountability, and responsiveness to its citizens, are considered elements for responsive growth and fair distribution of public services. Do they, however, necessarily propel the requisite economic growth necessary for a nation? Therefore, the seminar will contrast and compare, whether democratic institutions, promote requisite growth, or exacerbate income and educational inequality, and inhibit efficient management of an economy.
