8 July 2024, Geneva, Switzerland - UNITAR has recently inaugurated the Prosperity Alliance centres in Beijing and Shanghai, marking a milestone in their mission to promote sustainable development and global cooperation in Beijing on 18 June 2024  and in Shanghai on 20 June 2024.

The Prosperity Alliance Beijing Center was officially launched on 18 June 2024. Jointly initiated by UNITAR, Huacai Wentou (Beijing) Cultural Technology Co., Ltd., and the National Institute for Development and Governance at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), Prosperity Alliance Beijing will function as a network aiming to strengthen sustainable economic development partnerships, mobilize resources and promote innovation and cooperation among governments, non-governmental organizations, academia and enterprises. It will also serve as a platform for exchanging ideas, sharing experiences and building collaborations. 

The centre will offer high-quality training programmes and activities in fields including ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), trade, investment and business facilitation, youth development, talent development for international organizations, frontier technology, entrepreneurship, private sector development, digital economy, leadership and inclusion.

At the launch, UNITAR Executive Director Mr. Nikhil Seth said, “Today we stand at a historic turning point. The world is facing complex challenges that cannot be solved by any single individual – they require global action.” He highlighted China’s leading role in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals. UN Resident Coordinator in China Mr. Siddharth Chatterjee and CEO of Huacai Wentou (Beijing) Cultural Technology Co., Ltd., Mr. Lu Junjie also voiced strong support for Prosperity Alliance Beijing, emphasizing the importance of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development.

Two days later, on 20 June, UNITAR signed an agreement with Shanghai Climate Week to establish the Prosperity Alliance Shanghai. Mr. Seth and Ms. Guan Jie, Secretary-General Secretariat of the Executive Committee, signed the agreement in the presence of distinguished guests and key stakeholders. 

Prosperity Alliance Shanghai aims to strengthen partnerships, mobilize resources and promote innovation and cooperation among various sectors to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable economic growth. The Alliance will offer training programmes and activities in green development, climate action, ESG, youth development, trade, frontier technology and entrepreneurship.

At the ceremony, Vice President of the Shanghai Service Federation Mr. Jian Danian highlighted the impact of Prosperity Alliance Shanghai: “Shanghai Climate Week is dedicated to addressing climate change through proactive measures and community engagement. The partnership with UNITAR will amplify our efforts and enable us to make a lasting difference in the fight against climate change.” Mr. Seth also underscored the importance of collaboration in achieving global sustainability goals.
