UNITAR has joined the Nairobi Framework initiative aimed at assisting developing countries especially those in sub-Saharan Africa, to improve their level of participation in the Clean Development Mechanism. (CDM) The UN Secretary-General, in his address during the opening of the high-level segment of COP/MOP 2, held in 2006, in Kenya, stated that the CDM “…has become a multi-billion dollar source of funding for sustainable development … an outstanding example of a UN-led partnership linking government action to the private sector in the developing world.” The Climate Change Programme of UNITAR has since 1990 been involved in capacity development initiatives for developing countries and continues to partner with other organizations to enhance skills and knowledge. The Nairobi Framework is yet another opportunity to strengthen these partnerships and is a cooperative action that will greatly serve the developing countries. The Nairobi Framework was initiated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Bank Group, African Development Bank, and the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development UNCTAD is also a new member of the initiative.
