28 June 2024, Hiroshima, Japan – In partnership with Indonesia Youth Diplomacy (IYD), UNITAR Division for Prosperity initiated “EmpowerASEAN: Youth Leadership Programme in the ASEAN Region.” The purposes of the programme are to foster youth capacity building through education on SDGs, social entrepreneurship, and related topics and to provide a platform for youth to articulate their ideas and visions relevant to SDGs.

The training programme ran from 8 June to 15 June 2024, encompassing online individual self-paced learning and group activities.

  • Opening Webinar: The introductory session to the programme, held on 8 June.
  • The EdApp course: The self-paced learning process through interactive EdApp application, which took place between 8 June and 14 June.
  • Hackathon: The group work and presentation session, held on 15 June.

On 8 June 2024, the UNITAR Division for Prosperity officially hosted the opening webinar of the “EmpowerASEAN: Youth Leadership Programme in the ASEAN Region” training programme through a Zoom meeting for 27 participants to receive necessary information about the programme. The webinar started with warm greetings from the programme leaders, A.J. Koikoi, and Benjamin Echikson, and a self-introduction of training staff from UNITAR and delegates from IYD. Following the orientation, training staff from UNITAR provided a walk-through of the programme structure and objectives and a short lecture on UNITAR, the UN system, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

After enrolling in self-paced online learning on EdApp from 8-14 June 2024, the participants gathered again on 15 June 2024 for the hackathon session. They were assigned to work in groups to brainstorm and present project proposals regarding providing educational resources for underprivileged communities. The topic of discussion was highly relevant to SDG4: Quality Education. Following the group discussion, each group made their 3–5-minute final pitches and a top-performing team stood a chance to win mentoring sessions from UNITAR.

In the final pitches, UNITAR selected the winning team that proposed a project with an initiative to enhance digital literacy through access to digital educational resources for youth and young adults in East Timor. The team consists of five members, all of whom will receive mentoring sessions from UNITAR.
