15 December 2017, Geneva, Switzerland - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and its Women’s Leadership Programme is organizing high-level seminar on Overview and Next Steps: Implementing the Declaration on Trade and Women’s Economic Empowerment. The event is taking place on Tuesday 19th December, 1:00 – 2:30 pm, at the Club Suisse de la Presse, Route de Ferney 106, La Pastorale, 1202 – Genève.
The public panel discussion comes as a follow-up event after the adoption of the Declaration on Trade and Women’s Economic Empowerment, issued at the 11th World Trade Organization’s Ministerial Conference in Buenos Aires on 10-13 December 2017 and signed by member countries of the WTO. The purpose of the Declaration is to provide a framework and platform for members to foster a more inclusive trade agenda as they seek to ensure that trade benefits all.
The Declaration recognizes gender as an essential component of inclusive economic growth, which requires gender-responsive trade policies. It also states that international trade and investment drive growth, and inclusive trade policies can lead to better outcomes for women, growth, and poverty reduction, while acknowledging that women face specific barriers to participating in the economy.
The expected outcome is a deeper understanding of trade policies and practices that support a greater integration of women, especially micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, into the global economy, to assist countries craft more gender-responsive trade and development policies.
