UNITAR Executive Director attends 72nd Session of the General Assembly
20 September 2017 – United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) New York Office welcomes the arrival of Mr. Nikhil Seth, Executive Director of UNITAR from the headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. Seth’s three-day mission, the 20th to the 22nd of September, is comprised of various meetings with Permanent Representatives, National Ministers, Foundation Leadership, and High Representatives.
Mr. Seth began his mission with participation in the Senior Segment of the 23rd Senior Officials Meeting (SOM23) of the Environment Management Group (EMG), which hosted a strategic discussion of key environmental issues warranting a UN system-wide response and directions for the future work of the EMG, such as delivering on the 2030 Agenda and the sustainability of internal UN operations.
This was followed by meetings with Mission representatives. Mr. Seth met H.E María Emma Mejía Vélez, Permanent Representative of Colombia, and Colombia’s Minister of Planning, Mr. Luis Fernando Mejia, and they discussed upcoming events, particularly the conference titled, “International Meeting on Capacity-Building: Implementation in Latin America of the Agenda 2030”, to be held in Cartagena, Colombia on 30 October to 1 November. Mr. Seth was also able to meet with Managing Director of the Americas, Ms. Edita Hrda European External Action Service (EEAS), H.E. Mr. Sabri Boukadoum, Permanent Representative of Algeria, also discussed future collaboration opportunities with UNITAR. Upon meeting with H.E. Mr. Lauber Jürg, Permanent Representative of Switzerland, Mr. Seth thanked and congratulated the Permanent Mission’s successful orientation course, co-organized by UNITAR, on the Fifth Committee for new delegates held from 5 to 8 of September 2017.
