UNITAR and UNIDO Host a Training Workshop on Diplomatic Protocol
28 June 2016, Vienna, Austria - UNITAR held a Training Workshop on Diplomatic Protocol in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
The training that aimed at helping UNIDO staff gain a deeper understanding of the rules, practices and traditions that apply in the protocol of international organizations, was attended by 30 participants, 21 women and 9 men. The workshop was facilitated by Ms. Alice Hecht, former Chief of the Office of Protocol, Executive Office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Having covered briefly the history of protocol in diplomacy, Ms. Hecht outlined the challenges of protocol in international organizations and differences between bilateral and multilateral protocol and explained the order of precedence.
The workshop also covered protocol at social events, diplomatic courtesy and the use of titles in written correspondence. Through lively discussions, practical exercises and interactive approach, Ms. Hecht shared her own experience in organizing formal visits and social gatherings for Heads of States and Governments, high ranking UN officials, Ambassadors and Ministers. The participants found the workshop “very interesting… with very relevant explanations and examples. The trainer was great with very interesting true stories”.
UNITAR looks forward to more opportunities for collaboration with UNIDO in the future.
