6 August 2024, New York, United States – From 01 July – 01 August 2024 United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) New York Office in partnership with Qatar Leadership Centre (QLC) and the International Advisory Group (IAG), hosted an exclusive fellowship programme for Qatar University students from 1 July to 5 August. This unique 5-week opportunity was designed to provide third and fourth-year students with unparalleled knowledge, professional experience, and leadership skills through immersive training and various United Nations agencies.
During the orientation programme for this fellowship, the students learned about a range of subjects, including International Relations, Environmental Policy, Human Rights, Economic Development, Youth Empowerment, Refugee Support and more. Following their introduction to the United Nations system, fellows had the unique opportunity to complete a month-long internship with one of several UN agencies, providing them with hands-on experience in the work of the United Nations.
01 – 05 July: Week 1 – Foundation Phase
The programme began with an intensive in-person training week at the UN Headquarters in New York. This phase included briefings and interactive sessions led by high-level UN representatives, current and former ambassadors, diplomats, and experts. The training aimed to equip fellows with essential knowledge about the UN’s mission, structure, and operations.
The key training sessions focused on the introduction to the United Nations System, Diplomatic Protocol and Etiquette, International Relations and Global Governance, Crisis Management and Conflict Resolution, and Leadership and Team Building. Throughout the programme, the students acquired crucial skills such as working in a global context, negotiation and diplomacy, leadership and critical thinking, cultural competence, policy analysis and development, sustainable development and environmental policy, and human rights and international law.
A highlight of the first week was the field visit to Washington D.C., where fellows engaged with key international institutions and policymakers. They visited Capitol Hill, where they met with congressional staff and learned about the legislative process; the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where they engaged in discussions on global financial systems; the World Bank, where they gained insights into international development projects; and the Qatar Cultural Attache Office, where they learned about Qatar’s cultural identity and contributions to the global cultural landscape.
08 July – 01 Aug: Week 2-5 – Internship Phase
The practical internship phase spanned the next four weeks, offering fellows hands-on experience at various UN agencies. This phase allowed the fellows to apply their training in real-world settings. They were assigned to agencies such as UN DESA, UNRWA, the Department of Peace Operations, UNGP, and the International Civil Service Commission. Special features of the internship phase included attendance at the UN General Assembly sessions and the High-Level Political Forum, providing fellows with unique insights into global policymaking and international diplomacy.
Last August 1, 2024, the fellowship concluded with a celebratory graduation ceremony. The ceremony began with opening remarks from H.E. Marco Suazo, Head of Office at UNITAR NYO. It distributed the fellows’ certificates with H.E. Mr. Mohammed Khalifa H. Al-Nasr, First Secretary, Deputy Permanent Representative of the state of Qatar to the United Nations.
Overall, this fellowship programme provided the students with a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, equipping them with essential skills and a deep understanding of international diplomacy and global governance The immersive training and internships have prepared these young leaders to contribute significantly to their fields and their nation’s development.
