26 November 2024, New York, USA - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) office in New York  and Columbia Law School have collaborated to deliver another set of impactful series of workshops for this fall, addressing critical global issues through skill-building and education. The participants encompassed diplomats from the UN Secretariat, industry professionals, non-government organizations, with every session attracting over 100 registrants, benefitting a total of approximately 200 in-person participants. Building on this success, UNITAR and Columbia Law School are collaborating again for a special Mediation and Multilateral Clinic in Spring 2025.

Session 1 - Mental Health and Conflict Resolution

UNITAR

The first session, held on 28 October 2024, explored the intersection of conflict resolution and mental health. It highlighted the pervasive effects of poor mental health, exacerbated by geopolitical conflicts and limited access to care. Participants engaged in discussions and simulations to identify the ethical challenges posed by mental health in conflict resolution and to practice tools for managing tensions and advocating for solutions in challenging circumstances.

Session 2 – Empowering Women in the Peace Process

UNITAR

On 12 November 2024, the series focused on "Empowering Women in the Peace Process," emphasizing gender equality's pivotal role in negotiations and sustainable development. This workshop addressed barriers hindering women’s participation in peacemaking processes and explored strategies to foster inclusion at organizational and systemic levels. Participants gained insights into creating change within organizations and supporting women as negotiators, mediators, and leaders in diplomacy, aligning these efforts with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

Session 3 - Mediation Skills Training

UNITAR

The series concluded on 25 November 2024, with an interactive session on mediation and negotiation skills, led by distinguished experts, including Judge Shawn Watts and Professor Alexandra Carter. This session delved into the foundations of mediation, active listening, and open questioning as essential tools for effective conflict resolution. Participants left equipped with practical skills to navigate conflicts constructively and contribute to a more inclusive and peaceful global environment.
