A validation workshop on Natural Resource Management in Post-Conflict Countries is being held in Geneva, Switzerland in partnership with UNITAR Peacekeeping Training Programme (PTP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). The course will be held from February 17 and February 18, 2010.
The workshop is based on current research that suggests that over the last sixty years, at least 40% of all intrastate conflicts have had a link to natural resources. The potential security implications of climate change are also gaining international attention, as the shifting distribution of natural resources, combined with increased scarcity, may lead to new sources of conflict.
Using case studies, the workshop focuses on how resources can be managed in post-conflict environments to reduce potential obstacles to peace, and draws attention to how natural resource management can support broader peacebuilding interventions, confidence-building measures and overall state building.
At the end of the workshop, the thirty three participants will be able to identify the principles for effective post-conflict natural resources management, relate natural resources management to other post-conflict stabilization interventions and state building, and understand how peace operations can benefit from green technologies for water, energy and waste.
This course is fully funded by the German Federal Foreign Office.
