9 - 11 April 2019, Bangkok, Thailand – The Division for Multilateral Diplomacy (DMD) of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) successfully implemented an insightful workshop on Multilateral Conferences and Diplomacy in Bangkok, Thailand, from 9 to 11 April 2019. The three-day workshop was hosted for 20 diplomats from member states accredited to the ESCAP in Bangkok. Considering the high importance of multilateral conferences to achieve policy objectives, the workshop allowed participants to enhance their knowledge, skills and confidence to perform more efficiently in bilateral and multilateral negotiations.The workshop was conducted in English by His Excellency Mr. Amr Aljowaily, a seasoned and highly appreciated UNITAR expert on multilateral conferences and diplomacy.
As Egypt’s ambassador to Serbia and thanks to previous diplomatic postings at New York, Geneva and Washington DC, His Excellency Mr. Amr Aljowaily possesses invaluable knowledge and experience in the field of multilateral negotiations and diplomacy which he generously shared with the participants. In line with UNITAR’s vision of providing innovative and high-quality trainings to guarantee a high learning outcome, the workshop consisted of interactive sessions, real life examples and numerous simulation exercises alongside theoretical inputs.
On the first day, participants were warmly welcomed by representatives of UNITAR and UNESCAP and the expert introduced them to the work in a multilateral environment. Important issues such as decision-making and formal processes in conferences were discussed in a profound manner. The second day of the workshop comprised of strategies how to effectively participate in multilateral conferences and negotiations.
On the final day, participants could deepen and apply newly acquired skills and knowledge in simulation exercises and engaged in discussions on current challenges in multilateral diplomacy and reform initiatives for the United Nations.
Overall, the workshop has been a great success. Participants were highly satisfied by the conduct of the workshop and 100% of them reported that the trainer maintained an environment for learning and that he successfully stimulated their participation. All participants (100%) said that they were going to implement the newly acquired knowledge in their jobs. Based on this positive feedback, UNITAR looks forward to implementing further successful workshops on this topic in the future.
