18-19 April 201, Jakarta, Indonesia - In cooperation with the Diplomatic Academy of Indonesia, UNITAR's Multilateral Diplomacy Programme (MDP) organized a two day training workshop for Junior, Mid-level and Senior Diplomats from Indonesia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). On the first day the senior diplomats received a briefing on Leadership, where they got to know the evolution and the different theories of leadership leading to a value based and transformational leadership.
This session helped the participants demystify the concept of leadership and identify the true pillars of leadership and their relevance for their daily work. the afternoon was devoted to a discussion with mid-level diplomats about the structure and functioning of the United Nations System. The diplomats were given an overview of the UN system as well as a historical, political, and analytical frame-work to analyze current issues relevant to the UN.
The training complemented their understanding of the development, the processes and procedures of the UN and its principal organs which will enable them to work effectively with UN representatives and staff. Day two was devoted to a training for 60 junior diplomats on the United Nations System as well as conference diplomacy and multilateral negotiations. In the session about conference diplomacy the junior diplomats learned how multilateral conferences unfold, how to detect and incorporate another delegations strategy and how to use appropriate language. They also got to know the importance of informal consultations and rules of procedure, skills that will enhance their performance as conference delegates.
