21 October 2021, Hiroshima, Japan – On 15 November 2021, UNITAR is launching its 6-week online training programme Strategic Response to COVID-19 Crisis: Empowering the Sahel Region through Digital Reskilling and Upskilling to Enhance Productive Sources of Livelihood and Employment and is currently accepting applications until 10 November.

The programme will be in French and is open to women and youth in eight countries (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal) in the Sahel region. Applicants should have a deep interest in digital technologies, good oral and written French skills and the passion to make a positive impact on society.

The programme aims to create opportunities for participants to address growing wage gaps, the digital divide, and new challenges in the post-COVID-19 work environment. By the end of the course, participants will be able to transform their entrepreneurial ideas into digital products to empower others and effectively address critical issues in their communities.

The training will be locally contextualized and delivered fully online. Participants will learn at their own pace, working on self-directed projects while engaging with thematic and regional experts, mentors and peers online.

The Sahel is plagued by challenges and is one of the most vulnerable regions in the world. The growing conflicts and its impact on the region’s socioeconomic development were further worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic – yet another layer of crisis on an already complex humanitarian situation.

While complex development challenges in the Sahel region are numerous, they often overshadow the region’s enormous potential. It is also one of the world’s most youthful regions, with 65 per cent of the population below 25 years of age. To develop the Sahel sustainably, the constraints must be turned into opportunities. These millions of young people can bring about change if given the right tools and resources. Upskilling and reskilling, especially in digital skills, will be their tools to take advantage of new opportunities.

Supported by the Government of Japan, the programme teaches learners the skills to excel in the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) and empowers them to lead.

The course will be conducted in French. It will cover programming and coding skills, digital literacy, application development, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence training, and combine them with gender leadership training. During the final week, there will be an online hackathon to test participant’s skills.

The programme is open to women and youth in the Sahel region who have:

Le programme sera en français et ouvert aux femmes et aux jeunes issus de huit pays (Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Tchad, Guinée, Mali, Mauritanie, Niger et Sénégal) de la région du Sahel. Les candidats doivent partager un intérêt marqué pour les technologies numériques, avoir de bonnes compétences en français oral et écrit, et l’envie d'avoir un impact positif sur la société.

Le programme vise à créer des opportunités pour les participants destinées à combler les écarts salariaux croissants, la fracture numérique et les nouveaux défis dans l’environnement de travail post-COVID-19. À la fin du cours, les participants seront en mesure de transformer leurs idées entrepreneuriales en produits numériques pour responsabiliser leur entourage et aborder de manière efficace les problématiques critiques au sein de leurs communautés.

La formation, adaptée au contexte du Sahel, sera dispensée entièrement en ligne. Les participants seront en mesure d’apprendre à leur propre rythme, en travaillant sur des projets de façon autogérée tout en interagissant en ligne avec des experts, des mentors et des pairs de la région.

Le Sahel est en proie à de nombreux défis et reste l’une des régions les plus vulnérables au monde. Les conflits croissants et leur impact sur le développement socio-économique de la région ont été aggravés par la pandémie de COVID-19 – ajoutant une nouvelle dimension de crise à une situation humanitaire déjà complexe.

Tandis que les défis du développement dans la région du Sahel sont complexes et nombreux, ils éclipsent bien souvent l’énorme potentiel de cette région. C’est également l’une des régions les plus jeunes du monde dont 65% de la population est âgée de moins de 25 ans. Pour développer durablement le Sahel il faut transformer les contraintes en opportunités. Ces millions de jeunes peuvent amener du changement s’ils disposent des bons outils et des ressources nécessaires. Le perfectionnement et l’évolution de compétences, notamment dans les compétences numériques, seront leurs outils pour tirer parti de nouvelles opportunités.

Soutenu par le gouvernement du Japon, le programme enseigne aux participants les compétences nécessaires pour exceller dans la 4e révolution industrielle (4IR) et leur donne les moyens d’agir.

Le cours se déroulera en français. Il portera sur la programmation et le codage, les compétences numériques, le développement d’applications, la cyber-sécurité et l’intelligence artificielle, en les combinant avec une formation en leadership en matière de genre. Au cours de la dernière semaine, un hackathon en ligne sera organisé pour tester les compétences des participants.

Le programme est ouvert aux femmes et aux jeunes issus de la région du Sahel qui ont :

• un intérêt marqué pour les technologies numériques ;
• de bonnes compétences en français oral et écrit ;
• l’envie d’avoir un impact positif sur la société.
