25 May 2022, Geneva, Switzerland - The Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC), in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) delivered a two-day virtual conference on the 24th and 25th of May on “Contemporary Literacy on Anti-Corruption.” The event was opened by His Excellency Dr Ali Bin Fetais Al Marri, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at ROLACC and was moderated by Mr. Alex Mejia, Director of UNITAR’s Division for People and Social Inclusion. Panelists included experts and practitioners from Asia, Europe, MENA region, Africa, and the Americas, who were representing various International Organizations, Non- Governmental Organizations, private entities, and academic institutions.
The lack of literacy on contemporary issues related to anti-corruption plays an important role in the proliferation of corrupt acts, especially in regard to the ‘Five Alarms’ raised by the United Nations Secretary General in 2022, these being; challenges coming from COVID19; the global financial system; climate change; lawlessness of cybersecurity; as well as peace and security. In this regard, strengthening capacities can be positive to mitigate causes and effects through a better understanding of opportunities.
This conference focuses on these 5 alarms, and seeks to provide a platform for discussion, knowledge exchange, and comparison of case studies. It follows from the success of ROLACC and UNITAR in developing learning tools focused on Anticorruption and its links with Human Rights, Sustainable Development and Technologies, that have trained hundreds of persons from all regions.
