17 July 2019, Jeju, Republic of Korea - The International Training Centres for Authorities and Leaders in Jeju (CIFAL Jeju) and in Newcastle (CIFAL Newcastle) hosted the 14th Youth Workshop on Engagement for Sustainable Consumption and Production from 10 to 12 July 2019 in Jeju, South Korea. The workshop gathered students from different backgrounds and nationalities including 20 students from the University of Newcastle in Australia, and 27 Korean and International students enrolled in various universities in the Republic of Korea.
The main goal of this workshop was to raise awareness amongst youth about the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular about the SDG 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”, by encouraging them to analyze their footprint and to look into ways in which disaster resilience fit into the SDGs.
The second day included a field trip to learn about current production and consumption management systems in Jeju. The field trip consisted of a visit to the Sustainable Environmental Education Center Landfill to observe how waste products and food waste are treated and recycled. Participants also learned more about renewable energy at the Korea Institute of Energy Research.
At the end of the workshop, the participants presented action plans on Sustainable Consumption and Production that included feasible alternatives to have a more eco-friendly life. This event was an excellent opportunity for youth to broaden their knowledge on the SDGs and to take an active role in developing concrete solutions to advance the global goals.
