13-16 November 2018, Jeju, Republic of Korea – The International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Jeju (CIFAL Jeju) in partnership with the Regional Support Office of the Bali Process hosted a workshop on “Enhancing Human Security in the Asia Pacific Region”.

Capacity building on human security contributes to a holistic implementation of the 2030 Agenda as this topic addresses the root causes of persistent poverty, as well as it promotes peaceful and inclusive societies, and most important it bolsters the transition from humanitarian crisis to longer term sustainable development.

Recognizing the importance of ensuring human security in societies, CIFAL Jeju organized a four-day workshop that gathered 20 representatives from the government, NGO and academic sectors from 15 different countries, including Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

Workshop sessions were focused on topics related to humanitarian crisis such as migration with emphasis on the identification and protection of victims of human trafficking; prosecution of traffickers; assistance to victims of trafficking and refugees in the context of sustainable reintegration; Regional Strategic Roadmap; among others. During these sessions, participants were able to develop strategic plans to cope issues around human security based on UNITAR CityShare methodology.

By the end of the workshop, attendees visited the Memorial Park where they could learn best practices on overcoming human security issues. Participants also visited touristic places such as the Seopjikoji Hill and Seogwipo Traditional Daily Market.
