CIFAL Jeju Co-organizes International Workshop on Transforming Eco-Cities to Environmental Hubs through Holistic Waste Management
3 August 2015, Jeju, Republic of Korea – CIFAL Jeju convened thirteen central, state and local government officials and NGO workers from six different countries from Asia-Pacific for a four-day workshop on "Transforming Eco-Cities to Environmental Hubs through Holistic Waste Management." CIFAL Jeju, in collaboration with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and UNEP International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC), held the event from 6 to 9 July 2015 at Jeju International Training Center and Jeju International Convention Center.
Countries represented in the workshop included Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Nepal and Philippines. The event served as a platform to build capacities in sustainable strategy options for holistic waste management including contemporary city paradigms and international trends in transforming eco-cities to environmental hubs. The event also provided the space for in-depth knowledge and good practices sharing for city-to-city cooperation in formulating ways to finance transfer of technologies related to waste management and eco-towns/cities.
The workshop was led by twelve experts on waste management and technologies transfer: Mr. Ken Izumi from Osaka City Environment Bureau, Japan; Mr. Jong-hyun Kim from Korea Technology Finance Corporation, Republic of Korea; Dr. Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed Memon from UNEP IETC; Dr. Mr. Jeong-in Kim from Chung-Ang University, Republic of Korea; Mr. Soon-young Moon from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Republic of Korea; Mr. Surendra Man Shrestha from UNEP IETC; Dr. Mr. Dai-yeun Jeong from Asia Climate Change Education Center, Republic of Korea; Dr. Mr. Tae-youn Kim from Jeju Development Institute, Republic of Korea; Mr. Rae-kwon Chung from UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific; Ms. Grazyna Teresa Pulawska from Asia Europe Foundation; Dr. Mr. Chang-ki Kwon from Ulsan Development Institute, Republic of Korea; and Dr. Mr. Ali Gul Qureshi from Kyoto University, Japan.
The lecture focused on key topics including international cooperation examples; financing of technologies transfer; holistic waste management templates and guidelines; eco-cities to environmental hubs; and Korea’s green growth policy and eco-town models.
The workshop was highly dynamic including an expert seminar jointly held with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on "How to Promote for Successful Jeju World Environmental Hub?". The participants also had a chance to meet and learn from environment experts from various countries while participating in some sessions of the "2015 Jeju World Leaders’ Conservation Forum.” The workshop concluded with a visit to the "Smart Grid Information Center" and "Seongsan Ilchulbong" (UNESCO World Natural Heritage).
