CIFAL Curitiba Promoting STEM Education in Brazil
20 September 2018, Curitiba, Brazil – The International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders in Curitiba (CIFAL Curitiba) hosted the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Program between the 20 and 31 of August across the State of Paraná in Brazil.
STEM education is becoming increasingly recognized as a key driver of opportunity, and data show that the need for STEM knowledge and skills will grow and continue into the future. It is estimated that in the next five years, major companies will need to add 1.6 million of STEM-skilled employees in Latin America. Labor market data also show that the set of core cognitive knowledge, skills, and abilities that are associated with a STEM education are now in demand not only in traditional STEM occupations, but in nearly all job sectors and types of positions.
As part of this Program, 21 schools from the Social Service of Industry (SESI) Network of Schools of Paraná participated in a series of lectures to learn about STEM careers. The Program seeks to encourage interest in STEM education and to demonstrate the importance of these areas for the economy and development of the State of Paraná and Brazil.
Students from all over Paraná State had the opportunity to learn from engineering students and industry professionals. Each lecture featured two guest speakers who discussed STEM careers and opportunities.
Additionally, Engineering students were asked to present on his/her degree, and what career options students may have in this field. Industry professionals were invited to share about aspects of their profession and experiences in the industry. They also discussed the indispensable role of engineers in development, as well as some challenges and possibilities this career presents.
