Participants of the workshop.18 April 2017, Curitiba, Brazil – The International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders (CIFAL) in Curitiba, Brazil, in partnership with the Social Service for Industry (SESI) in Parana, the Information Company of Parana (Celepar) and the Brazilian Business School ISAE launched its III Cycle of Studies on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The inaugural workshop took place on 19 April in the City of Curitiba, bringing together 80 participants from the public and private sector to focus on SDG 13: “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”.

During the workshop, a set of indicators related to SDG 13 were analyzed. Ms. Isabela Drago who is responsible for the creation of development indicators and research at SESI Parana provided an overview on the importance of indicators to monitor progress and highlighted: “SDG 13 presents many challenges such as the capacity to adapt to climate related risks and natural disasters, the integration of climate change into policies and strategies, and the impact of human activities on climate change”.

The President of ISAE Business School, Prof. Norman Arruda Filho stressed the need of raising awareness among different sectors and groups about the SDGs. “We have a task ahead: Identify what we are doing and what we can do to contribute to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. Our challenge is to realize the SDGs. There is no single solution to achieve each SDG as the 17 Goals are interconnected”, said Mr. Filho. Charles Carneiro; Ms. Isabela Drago; Prof. Norman Arruda Filho; Captain Eduardo Pinheiro; Prof. Zeca Simões (from left to right).

Professor Charles Carneiro of ISAE Business School and consultant at the Sanitation Company of the State of Parana offered participants with an overview of the impact of climate change on water. “There is evidence that 20% of the global population lacks access to water and there is a increasing number of water related disasters such as floods, while sea levels continue to rise due to the ocean and atmospheric warming”.  We need to focus on preventive measures rather than mitigation”, Prof. Carneiro said.

The Director of the Centre for Studies on Civil Defense Captain Eduardo Pinheiro focused on the relation between climate change and disasters such as floods and landslides. “Municipalities and local governments need to be prepared to anticipate the risks and the impact of disasters”, Captain Pinheiro stressed.

As part of the III Cycle of Studies on the SDGs, the next workshop will take place in the Municipality of São José dos Pinhais on 22 May at 19:30 at the Faculty of Administration and Economy (FAE).
