UNITAR’s Multilateral Diplomacy Programme (MDP) is currently conducting a three-week long workshop with participating trainers from the Diplomatic Academies of South Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The unique setup of this Training of Trainers consists of several related workshops that mutually reinforce each other, thereby leading to an unprecedented added value for both diplomatic academies.
The main components of the Training of Trainers are a workshop on the dynamics of Multilateral Conference Diplomacy and a highly creative and interactive refresher course on Training Techniques. Thanks to this interrelated programme, the participants are coming up with many original ideas on how to enrich their individual trainings with regard to the latest content and methodology.
The focus on active participation and empowerment of participants makes it immediately possible to adapt the lessons learnt and receive valuable feedback by our experienced moderators. The training methods include open discussions, case studies, analyses of simulations & exercises, and presentations. Follow-up workshops complete the programme by covering methodological background knowledge, learning theory, and monitoring & evaluation possibilities. Individualised round tables with senior officials from the Geneva-based UN agencies, allow the participants to discuss how these two African countries can raise their concerns within the multilateral context of the United Nations.
The overall aim of the course is to assist in the establishment of additional training modules on conference diplomacy and multilateral negotiation conducted by the experienced trainers at both diplomatic academies. This includes the capacity to transform knowledge and understanding into material, tools, and exercises tailored to the learning needs and policy objectives of both countries.
