Overview (quick description of the funded project and its context):

The United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) is a technology-intensive programme active since 2001 in applied research and innovative applications relating to geospatial information technology satellite analysis, and mapping. UNOSAT Programme Unit also delivers to its beneficiaries tailor made training courses on the use of geo-information technology for humanitarian aid, human security, disaster risk management, territorial planning and environmental monitoring.

General objectives of the contract:

In support to UNOSAT mapping and capacity development activities, the trainee will contribute to increasing the Programme visibility and at improving evidence-based decision making through the use of satellite imagery and geospatial information technologies.

Responsibilities:

The trainee will contribute to UNOSAT activities by:

  • Develop, produce, and edit videos and animated multimedia products for various platforms, including long form and social media content that will further UNOSAT’s work and community website (www.unosat.org);
  • Make complex ideas simple through effective writing skills, interactive infographics and visually compelling video content resulting from UNOSAT activities,
  • Collaborate with UNOSAT’s Human Rights and Human Security Section (HRHSS) and Rapid Mapping Section (RMS) to develop multimedia and communications content;
  • Contributing to outreach strategy definition and monitoring;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Measurable outputs/deliverables/schedule of deliverables:
  • Assist in the development videos as required;
  • Produce videos in timely manner;
  • Cartographic-based videos, and on-line communication provided when required throughout contract period. 
Performance Indicators for evaluation of results:
  • Overall programme visibility is enhanced;
  • Demonstrated competence to work in a team.
Learning Objectives:

By the end of the Traineeship, the incumbent will:

  • Gain practical experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and satellite imagery for Humanitarian relief, and disaster preparedness and response;
  • Increase knowledge on the use of GIS and satellite imagery within the UN system (applications, users and integrated solutions);
  • Gain practical experience in producing engaging videos and animations for a non-profit organization and in operational context;
  • Apply time and management skills in order to respect deadlines.
Reporting Structure:

The trainee reports to the Senior Specialist in charge of Business Exploration, Strategic Planning and Coordination Section and will work and liaise with other relevant UNOSAT staff as required.

Minimum requirements

Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate/postgraduate degree in journalism, media, communications, or a related field is highly desirable. Candidates with equivalent training/experience and a passion for journalism and/or human rights work are also encouraged to apply.

Media production: excellent knowledge of Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom and  InDesign) including Adobe XD, After Effect and Premiere Pro.

Languages --- Excellent knowledge in both oral and written English are required. Knowledge of other UN working languages (especially French) are an advantage.
